Back in Decmber 2019 I realised that I was getting behind with Cribblog so decided that I would skip planned posts and carry on with an account of current activities which were not boating but refurbishment works. At the time I thought that I had probably missed two, the Thames passage and Per's short Cribbit trip but now I've actually got round to doing them, I realise that there will be more than that and that the Thames passage alone will need to be split as it has nearly 150 pics which I think are too many for a single post.
So Cribblog4 is in three parts:
4a Aldermaston to Abingdon [This one]
4b Abingdon to Oxford
4c Oxford to err well Oxford actually
You can see this journey in reverse when I came down the Thames from Oxford to Reading in 2015.
Lots of Thames information to be found here at thames.me.uk
No pics for this stage as busy [and hot] and very anxious about the engine as I had not been able to give it the workout I had planned for it before taking on the Thames. So listening to its every beat with no thought for photography. [See Cribblog2019 Post 3 for details of the engine and
for the log of our Thames passage in the other direction in 2015.]
I had brought my 'good' camera with me though as I wanted the long focal length lens so as to emulate some of the photographs in a book I have called 'Down the Thames, photographic memories' this is a compilation of photographs from the
Francis Firth collection of postcards. I have had the book from early days on Cribbit and have put in it contemporary shots of some of the places in the book. Of course, the photographs are in copyright so I have not been able put them into this narrative but some of the links via
thames.me.uk do have them so following these links should ultimately lead you to the Francis Firth photograph.
Jim joined me last night and we motored over to ABC Marine at Aldermaston Wharf this morning. Fettled the engine and filled up everything that needed filling up and drained everything that needed draining and then a
long afternoon got us down to
The Cunning Man for much needed re-hydrating beers. Jim at the stove making his signature
Spanish omelette dish. [Having 'done'
'The History of Mr Poly' for 'O' Level English literature you would think I would be able to spell omelette but alas I had to look it up ... too many potential double letters for me!
Margaret and Terry joined us at The Cunning Man on their way north, from a rather posh party in Hemel Hempstead, Margaret abondoning Terry to the more down to earth delights of life on Cribbit.
